book worm (a.k.a. what a day (off)! )

it's tuesday evening, close to 11:30 pm and i sit in the family room typing away. blogging is cathartic for me, a way to release anxiety and stress from the day. and since i didn't post last night, i have to release stress from yesterday, so i write away tonight. listening to my husband sleeping in our bedroom, and harper occasionally calling out in search of her taggie from her crib before locating it and her thumb and putting herself back to sleep, i recall a phone call i got from my sister yesterday morning. "emily, stephanie just called mom and chris fell on the ice and he's being taken in an ambulance to the hospital." that was all it took for my emotions to flood and my mind to wander to places i didn't want it to go. what i later learned was that chris, my brother in virginia, was walking out to his car and had slipped on some ice hidden underneath the 40+ inches of snow they had received. he hit the crown of his head on the sidewalk/stonewall/pavement, not really sure what exactly. he thinks he blacked out, but can't be certain. he called for his wife, stephanie, who happened to be home. she had flown back from miami the night before, and was probably getting ready for work, but heard him calling for her. i can't imagine how she felt walking out to chris lying on the ground. she called 911, and chris was driven to the er. my mom, sister and i all called each other to see if we could fit any pieces together, and to tell each other how much we loved one another. and then we waited...

harper and i had the day off from school for mid-winter break. having a toddler run around the house in the middle of winter can be exhausting on both sets of nerves, so we packed up and headed to whole foods and to the library. i had to keep my mind off what was going on in virginia, and harper needed some entertainment outside of her usual array of toys. plus, we needed some items for our dinners this week. i sent stephanie a text sometime after i arrived to the grocery store, and she responded that they were waiting for a ct scan in the er.

after our whole foods visit, we ventured to the local library. silly to think that i have only been to the library once in the 5 1/2 years we've lived in this town, and i hadn't yet signed up for a library card or checked out a book. i think the book i attempted to check out last time i was there was skinny bitch, and i felt embarrassed asking the older ladies at the reception desk for it, but i did, and they didn't have it. so, i left, no books or library card in hand. this time, i had a few options to choose, and ended up walking out with all 3, plus 3 for harper. i'm certain i can't read all of them in 30 days, but i'll attempt to. harper loved the puzzle table and tunnels way more than the books, but she indulged me so i could capture a few shots. she loved it, and we will definitely go back.

on our way home, a few blocks from our house, my cell rang and i looked to see it was chris' cell calling. my stomach flipped, and i picked up quickly. it was, in fact, chris himself telling me they were on their way home. he left the er (in about 3 hours no less- now that's quality health care!) with a negative ct scan and 10 staples to the crown of his head. he sounded groggy, but i knew he was semi back to normal when i heard him tell steph not to text while driving. it was a quick call, but one he knew he had to make. i would not take just hearing from my mom or sister that he was ok. i had to hear his voice directly. he's 12 years older than me, and a few hundred miles away, but he's my big brother and he knows that i had to hear it from him. i breathed a huge sigh of relief, and kissed harper a million times before i laid her down for her nap, thankful for the blessings in our life and that our family is being watched over. oh, what a day...

i heart valentine's

i love valentine's day. yes, i am a sap for it. my favorite color is pink, so that's part of it. it's also because michael and i were engaged on valentine's day 7 years ago. i like it because it shines a bit of light on the bleakness of winter. it provides some warmth in this cold, dreary weather.

michael and i have taken turns cooking for each other for the last 8 years or so. we've discovered that we just hate going out for valentine's day. the prices inflate for just that evening, and it's so crowded everywhere you go, it's just not fun. we have been having date nights (not all) in our own home. harper goes to bed early anyways, so it's like we're out on our own, but we can kick back in comfy clothes and watch movies on the couch. this year was his turn to whip something up in the kitchen. we decided to celebrate on saturday, the 13th. harper and i were gone all day at my cousin, katie's, baby shower, so michael was able to hunt for recipes, leisurely grocery shop and start dinner with only maximus hanging around his ankles. he went a different route this time, usually it's steak, potatoes and vegetables, in a different form every time. but this time, he chose sushi (pre-made from whole foods) and made his own thai chicken soup. the dessert he chose was apple crisps. harper stayed up long enough to enjoy dinner with us, and surprise surprise, she sat on daddy's lap and slurped up the rest of his soup! we were happy that she was so willing to try it, and she loved being a big girl with daddy's large soup spoon eating from a grown-up bowl. then, she got dessert. she was more interested in the ice cream that went with it than the apple crisp itself. after her bedtime, we purchased "couples retreat" on demand. hilarious.

i'm including some photos from the shower. we had a wonderful time, and katie looks fantastic. hard to believe that in a few short months, she will have a beautiful little. i chose to allow harper to have some mini m&m's that graced the table. i have never given her chocolate before, and wasn't sure how she'd react. (who am i kidding?? i have the biggest sweet tooth anyone has ever known.) she delicately ate the first piece, then gobbled up the remaining ones in my hand, and promptly requested "more chocolate." i created a sweet monster... i guess i shouldn't be surprised, since michael was converted and has developed a small-sized sweet tooth since meeting me. i think it was about the only thing harper ate during the shower, besides a bite of grilled cheese and a walnut or 2. she'd ask anyone who would listen and oblige- "more chocolate?" i eventually requested that she eat one at a time, and she'd hold up her one finger, and then eat 2-3 at a time. oh well, a little sugar just makes her sweeter.

some things i love this valentine's day weekend...

i heart dinner at home.

i heart movies, especially in the comforts of home.

i heart pregnant bellies and showering moms-to-be.

i heart chocolate, and any sweet for that matter.

i heart my beautiful little family.

i heart love.

cookies!

my latest addiction has been cookies. any kind. homemade or girl scout. chocolate or oatmeal raisin. doesn't matter. i was surrounded by them last friday, in preparation for my cousin, katie's, baby shower. as co-host of the shower, i volunteered to make the favors- homemade sugar cookies with royal icing. my sister-in-law started this trend back when michael and i had our bridal shower in 2004, and they've been asked to work their magic for several other family events. i made the cookies for katie's bridal shower 2 years ago, but they did not turn out as well and i had some help from my mom. last july, when harper turned 1, i asked my sisters-in-law to help me bake and decorate candy-shaped cookies for her birthday party, so i got a first-hand tutorial on the tips and techniques to the cookies. this time, i made them on my own (with the assistance of my pastry chef, michael, who rolled the dough and cut out the shapes- he'd want me to make sure i gave him some credit). mixing the ingredients, baking them to the exact doneness, cooling them on baking racks, whipping up the icing and piping the design was relaxing. i found it thoroughly enjoyable. i did indulge in a few nibbles here and there, just to make sure my creation was edible for the 30 shower guests. i wouldn't want anyone to get sick, of course.

i was told that a side business is in my future. i've been telling my sisters-in-law this for years. they started this all, and i can't thank them enough for their help- the coveted recipe, borrowed materials, texts, tips. thank you jen and kelly!

love

this photo wasn't taken on valentine's day, but i was editing it today and i just love it. i love the way the sunlight is bouncing off harper's blonde locks, i love the fact that her hair is long enough to now fit into a "pony," i love that she loves to play dress up with my costume jewelry, and i love that she so intently is trying to put it on right. today is a day of love, and love her i do.

A new face

I sit here and type on my new MacBook- a Valentine's Day gift for my husband, from my husband, a gift to us. We've been wanting one for a while. Ever since Harper was born, it has been difficult to go down to the basement to work on the computer. It's cold down there, and I enjoy the upstairs warmth so much more. So, we finally get a new vehicle to use to write this blog, and it inspires me to finally rename it.

I had to come up with something new, as the name of our only child in the title won't suffice the blog forever. So, I renamed it in tribute to all my inspirations as of late...

beautiful little...

dreams.

words.

friends.

family.

babies.

moments.

enjoy our beautiful littles.

Scattered...and thankful

I didn't think I'd get back to this blog. Didn't think I'd have the time, or the energy. But, recently, something has been renewed in me.

There are a million things I could catch up on since my last blog 9 months ago. Looking at that last post, Harper is an itty bitty thing, barely able to sit up on her own. Now, she's a toddler who doesn't stop running, playing, laughing and talking! She's the light of our lives. But, rather than look to the past, I'm looking instead at the present. Keeping myself grounded and reminding myself of all there is to be thankful for.

I am thankful for my new job, which allows me to be with Harper in the same building all day, every day, and enables me to spend more time with her, both after school and with summers off. I am thankful for my marriage, which is going on 6 years in June, and the wonderful husband I have to share my life with. I am thankful for friends, who keep me sane, laughing and calm. I am thankful for our house, in this crazy real estate market, and the fact that it may not be the biggest, but it is filled with love, and lots of toys. And I am most thankful for our peanut, Harper Elizabeth, who fills our days with wonder and amazement, joy and life.

I have to thank my friend, Kellie, who I think was the one to inspire me to get back to my blog. I'm thinking of making a change to it- changing the name for a start. For anyone out there who might be reading this...do you have any thoughts??

To keep you coming back, here is a recent photo of Harper.

Here's to more...

harper is a changin...

whew, it's been a long time since our last blog, hasn't it?! our apologies. harper just keeps us so busy, we barely have time to sleep! so, some updates- harper now has 2 teeth, and is doing great with her eating. she's up to about 3 meals a day, plus snacks, though still gets most of her meals from mommy. she has surpassed sitting, and has moved to the army crawl scooting all around the floor in search of her toys, maximus' toys or things she shouldn't have (we're a little behind on the babyproofing, but she's quickly showing us what we need to put away.) she is babbling away, with sounds of "mama, dada, baba, nana." we love to hear what she has to say! mommy and daddy are still working, and harper is spending her days with nana or aunt heather and uncle tim. other than that, she is growing daily (though still a little peanut!) and will be 9 months old on the 17th of this month. crazy how fast time flies! here are some pictures to catch you up. and we promise, it won't be such a hiatus in the future. til next time...
can we go somewhere?
